Most people have fillings of one sort or another but today, because we are much more conscious of our smile, we can choose a natural looking alternative - the composite or tooth-coloured filling.

A composite resin is a tooth-coloured plastic mixture filled with glass (silicon dioxide) first introduced in the 1960s. Originally only used for front teeth because of their softer nature, modern improvements to their composition make them generically suitable today.

Composite fillings are more difficult to place than silver fillings so may take your dentist 15-20 minutes longer to complete and because they are considered to be a cosmetic treatment, they are not available on the NHS and must be paid for. The main advantage of composite fillings is their aesthetic appeal.

The main disadvantage is their life expectancy. White fillings have always been considered less long lasting than silver amalgam fillings but there are now new materials available with properties comparable to silver amalgam, and these are proving to be very successful. The life expectancy of your composite filling can depend on the depth of cavity and its position in the mouth; your dentist is best positioned to advise you.

Composite case 1

This 20 year-old patient had chipped part of his upper front tooth. To improve the appearance of the tooth, a composite (white) filling was carried out, and it has really evened up his smile again.

Composite case 2

This lady first had her lower front teeth filled before the age of 10 with METAL fillings! She had to endure this indignity through her teenage years and young adult life until they were replaced with older type white fillings which were not aesthetic. We agreed on their replacement using modern materials and as you can see the result transforms the smile. Our patient was extremely happy with the result!

White fillings and crowns

This gentleman had very large fillings in a tooth near the front which on eating broke off. Dr Briony Wood built up the tooth with a core of white filling and a crown to make it as good as new. The patient was very happy with the result.

All of this treatment was done with very gentle preparation of the teeth.

The Bioclear matrix system devised by Dr. David Clarke in the USA, brings white (or composite) fillings on front and back teeth into the 21st century. Using tooth shaped clear formers specific to individual teeth and an injection overmoulding technique that fills the tooth, it is possible to create exceptional results that can surpass the appearance of even porcelain crowns and veneers.
