  • 41% of adult men and 28% of adult women snore.
  • This figure rises with age - Over 50 years old 50% of men and 38% of women snore.
  • The British manufacturers of the ZX appliance receive over 500 calls a week from people who snore and are desperate for a solution.

What can be done?

Snoring is usually caused when the airway at the back of the throat constricts. This causes air to be inhaled at an increased speed and pressure. During sleep our lower jaw and tongue falls back to the rear of the throat. This, along with the soft tissues (tonsils, soft palate and uvula) vibrate, causing the sound of snoring.

The ZX appliance is like a small mouthguard and prevents the lower jaw and tongue from falling backwards and blocking the airway. The appliance is easy to fit in one short appointment and does not require impressions. Unlike nearly all other "anti-snoring" appliances the ZX is adjustable. This enables us to adjust the appliance until we achieve the ideal result.

What are the alternatives?

There are many alternatives to an anti snoring appliance. The main ones are:

  • Surgery - to remove the tissues blocking the airway.
  • CAP machine - this is a pressurised mask which forces air into the nose and mouth.
  • Nasal plaster strips - These only expand the Nasal passages and do not alleviate soft tissue vibration.
  • Weightloss - This helps by reducing the fatty tissues in the throat area.
  • Alcohol and Smoking - Avoid alcohol for 3 hours before bedtime and avoid smoking.
